MDA’s ALS Division introduces you to 31 people  - one each day for the month of May - who are living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

This series was inspired by Augie Nieto, ALS Division Co-Chairperson, who says that since his ALS diagnosis, instead of striving for success, his goal each day is to be significant.

In their own words, otherwise “ordinary” people describe the impact of living with a progressive, incurable and deadly disease. But their stories also tell how ALS has brought new significance to their lives in ways that you might not expect.

ALS can become anyone’s life story. Please join MDA’s world-leading effort to stop it.

Darlene, spouse
Nicole & Anthony Toune, daughter & son-in-law

Hobbies/Interests: Reading, Business Management, Politics & Sports

Date of ALS diagnosis: September 2006

Life before ALS: I was active in owning and managing a building development and real estate company. Enjoyed field work as well as weekend build projects that got me out of the office. Also enjoyed lawn care and yard maintenance.

Life with ALS: Finding new ways to reinvent myself to carry on a maximum level of productivity in fulfilling the tasks I had before ALS. This has proven to be a moving target as my condition changes.

How has ALS brought new significance to your life: I have always held the opinion that life is lived between ones’ ‘ears.’ Nothing has both challenged and proven this belief more acutely than ALS. One’s mind is the wellspring of all action in every aspect of life.
