MDA’s ALS Division introduces you to 31 people  - one each day for the month of May - who are living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease). 

This series was inspired by Augie Nieto, ALS Division Co-Chairperson, who says that since his ALS diagnosis, instead of striving for success, his goal each day is to be significant.

In their own words, otherwise “ordinary” people describe the impact of living with a progressive, incurable and deadly disease. But their stories also tell how ALS has brought new significance to their lives in ways that you might not expect. 

ALS can become anyone’s life story. Please join MDA’s world-leading effort to stop it.

Hobbies/Interests: Going to the park in my wheelchair, playing pin ball on the computer, I’m also a political junkie and am always watching cable news.

Date of ALS diagnosis: January, 2002

Life before ALS: I was Chief of Security on the Big M Casino ship on Ft. Myers Beach, FL.  I was later promoted to General Manager of Moss Marine.

Life with ALS: What was important to me five years ago is no longer valid.  I now spend a lot of time helping people with ALS and their caregivers.

How has ALS brought new significance to your life: Our family is closer now than ever before.  I am a strong person with visions of a cure any day now.  I’m involved with every fundraiser and function for MDA/ALS in my area, and I’m proud of it.
